Two years ago I was a board member of the Night of the Tip committee in the city Tilburg. In this blog I will tell you something about the time I was a board member and what I did for this great initiative for collecting money for projects in developing countries. Last Saturday, the 10th edition of the event for 2014 was held in several cities in the Netherlands.
The foundation “Night of the Tip”
The foundation “Night of the Tip” is a Dutch student initiative that wants to build a bridge between the people who go out in the Netherlands and small sustainable projects in developing countries. More than 100 students are working voluntarily to make this national event a big success. In co-operation with Impulsis, “Night of the Tip” has chosen a few projects of all the request they received. The raised amount will be doubled by Implusis, who support private initiatives of Edukans, ICCO and Kerk in actie.
PR-media board member year 2012
In 2012 I was responsible for the PR and media of the event in Tilburg. The board members were a total of 8 people. Together with the students association Olof and Asset we organized the first “Night of the Tip” in Tilburg.
The first thing we had to arrange were the bars and restaurants that would like to help us with collecting money for the projects. If we get no tips, the children will not be able to go to school in development countries.
It was tough to find bars and restaurants that would like to to help us because most of the employers had to give their own tip away. Most employers are students and can really use the money. We managed to convince them to donate their collected tip for a night. The children in the development countries need it more than they do.
My job that time was also to find some sponsors for the event and get more publicity. I found Q-promotions as sponsor to print our posters & flyers. I also arranged that they printed a big banner! I think they still use it now. I found “Q-promotions” as a sponsor because they sponsored my hockey team. It is always very useful when you already have some contacts. I am also a freelance media designer, so I have designed the posters and flyers.
Because of my study in communication and my feeling for public relations, I got the event in the publicity in Tilburg. The local newspaper wrote about us and also came to the event and took some pictures. The local radio station interviewed me.
I also had contacts in the municipality of Tilburg (I did an internship there). They put a press release on the website and a colleague came to make a short movie, where they interviewed me.
The event & the projects
The first event was a success in Tilburg! We started with a dinner with all students of Olof & Asset by Olof. After that we went bar-hopping. The bars that collected the money, came together for a drink. We also helped them a little bit. It was fun to go out and help the projects in the meantime. At a square in Tilburg, some dancers from Sylc dance group performed. It was a sunny evening in 2012 and a lot of people were eating at the terrace. They were enjoying the performance and they gave some money for the projects.
The total amount of money were collected in 2012 was 47.000 euro! Tilburg gathered 2000 euro. If I look back as I am writing this blog, I am very proud of the organization for our first “Night of the Tip” in Tilburg! I can recommend people in other cities of the Netherlands to go do a board member function for a couple of months. The first positive thing is that it is good to put on your resume, but it also gives you an awesome WOW feeling when you achieve something.
At the end of this week you can read my new blog about SIW, international volunteer projects. I was the event coordinator there for more than a year and helped with some Dutch projects with international youth.
